When it is a historical fiction with real characters and fixed points recorded in history, it becomes a fascinating journey between 2 points! This book is a masterpiece by any standard you choose! The last part in the series is full of action at each and every thread of the story. The action starts with ponniyin selvan who we left in book 3 and sets the context for the title Pinnacle of Sacrifice in English. The book builds up gloom for over 300 pages before the storm clouds clear to allow sunlight. Some of the twists and turns are sort of predictable but then the prose more than makes up for that. The book title somehow made you know all along what was to come and that whatever is the buildup is towards the one critical historical incident. Hence it is a marvel the amount of yarn built around this event.

Parts of the book are extremely moving. The book has strong female characters surprisingly for a time when the society was dominated by men. Manimegalai and Manthakini devi are immortalized doing a bit of injustice to the other heroines of previous parts like Poonkuzhali and Vanathi. The friendship between the characters that are at times extremely at logger heads was a bit hard to digest. You would want the 'bad guy' to be punished but then history says that guy lived on. The epilogue was brilliant where the author answered what happened after the period in the book. One very satisfying series read!Overall Series Rating: 5/5. The past one month, it feels like I have lived in the chola period. In the first book, it took me sometime to get into the story but from there it has been a fantastic ride.

At various points in the story, I have loved/hated the same characters, laughed with them, walked through deep dark forests, travelled to Srilanka, plotted with them, felt pity for characters I wanted dead from start, loved characters that I thought were inconsequential to the story. Individual books aptly named for the prime theme of that book, takes you through each part with almost everyone playing such a crucial role in holding the chola dynasty from falling apart. My favorites are definitely poonguzhali for her attitude, PS and Kundavai for their truthfulness towards their friends, manimegalai for her part in the last book, sendhan amudhan for being an honest person until the last sentence he uttered in the book and ofcourse vandhiyathevan for his charm(I did get annoyed at him for few reasons in the last book for which I am not willing to forgive him).

Kalki is an amazing author to say the least! The end of the 4th book left a lot of unanswered questions. Since I had a little idea about the major events in Chola history, I was keen to see how Kalki would bring his vivid imagination into the historical events.

Hats off to such a brilliant fusion of imagination and historical events! Hats off to such a brilliant fusion of imagination and historical events! But he slowly builds up the setting for future events which happen in the blink of an eye, that all you could do is just stay dazed and enthralled by Kalki's finesse. The plot has numerous twists and turns that I couldn't put the book down! I was especially spellbound by the flowery language and his deft handling of multiple legendary characters. Sure, there are a few flaws here and there and some unanswered questions in the story. Some of them would be answered just with a basic google search/ rudimentary research of Chola history, But some questions about the mystery of Nandini's birth are never answered.

I also didn't like the way he handled the 'older' Mathurantaka's storyline. Given that he's an important character, Kalki could've focused a bit more on the emotions of Sembiyan Devi or Chinna Pazhuvettarayar when people find out the truth about him. It felt like the writing was abrupt and Kalki was just glad to be rid of the character. But in the end, Ponniyin Selvan - Thiyaga Sigaram is an excellent read which would leave you fascinated with the lives of legendary kings/demigods who lived centuries ago. Thank you Kalki sir, for such an intriguing read which has made me appreciate the beauty of the Tamil language and culture. Hoping to read much more books like this! I knew it was a 5 volume set and a significant investment of time. The fact that the first two books were available on Kindle Unlimited pushed me towards it - and Pavitra Srinivasan's translation, a few pages in, ignited my interest immensely. Only later after reading other translations did I realize how wonderfully she has preserved what I perceive as the original tone of Kalki's work. The original work was serialized in a magazine and I, to some extent, experienced reading the book in a serialized form owing to the incomplete checks I did prior to embarking on the project.

I only saw 2 volumes of Pavitra Srinivasan's translations and blithely assumed that all other volumes would also be available. Only upon finishing the first two did I realize that Pavitra was still working on the third volume. I began searching all over for the other three volumes and quickly stumbled upon Indra Nelameggam's translation - the first part of third volume - available freely on the internet. I downloaded it to my kindle and read it. My appreciation of Pavitra's nuanced translation grew thousand fold upon reading Indra's underwhelming work. Sometimes, when translating works pertaining to a particular period in history set in a geography known for its linguistic achievements, a language with immense historical signficance, it is best to leave some form of the original words as they were, not only to retain the flavor of the original work but also to allow the user to get into the book's atmosphere.

At the sametime, some amount of sensitivity is called for. Calling Thevarams as Psalms is a ridiculous way of translating. There were more such jarring examples, but I won't get into those.

Suffice to say that I could not go any further than that first part and did not have the heart to go for any more freely available translations. Then I came across CV Karthik Narayanan's translation on Kindle.

I started again at the first part of Volume 3 and ploughed on. The going was much better with CVKN's pen. His translation was far more balanced and mature. Somehow, I am still partial to Pavitra's translations and will come back to those when they are available. Now coming to the 5 volumes, they are 'First floods', 'The cyclone', 'The killer sword', 'The crown' and finally 'The pinnacle of Sacrifice'. Of all the books, I found the first one the most satisfying.

It brought back fond childhood memories of reading Chandamama stories and such. It laid the foundation stone for my interest in the series, that did not waver much after reading subsequent books.Kalki Krishnamurthy is adept at portraying human emotions, the frailities of human nature, internal conflicts and the problems they create at one level, and the political strife, the majesty of great warriors, the intelligence and survival instincts of those holding important positions in great empires at another level. Also, his books contain some wonderfully independent and intelligent women - in fact, the key character that drives the narrative towards the doomsday that every reader would pray not happen, is an extraordinarily beautiful woman that does not have historical backing but only Kalki's fertile imagination to thank for her existence. The hero is not always right, he does not always win, he is beset with self doubt and the brave warrior he is, he quavers at times when faced with insurmountable odds.

Fate, that propels all lives forward, with nary a care of any individual's comfort is shown as it should be - the all powerful and uncontrollable thing that shapes lives of people and kingdoms. The intrigues and people caught in the web, their helplessness, the exaperation of people trying to do good, all these are captured very well.I have become a big fan of Kalki's works. Mentions about the valour of our great Tamil kings, the many famous battles they have fought and the advanced Tamil society induces a sense of pride.Overall, this is a must read historical fiction.About the translated version: While the literal WORD-BY-WORD translation is off putting at times, its not very easy to translate such an epic masterpiece either. And the author succeeds in what he meant to do.

He has given the reader, an opportunity to experience this wonderful masterpiece. A five part Magnum Opus that gives a beautiful opportunity to teavel 1000+ back in time, to the Chola period. Travel to the Thanjavur belt will never be the same again.

Legendary stuff. Finally, if the reader felt aligned with one of the key characters (வந்தியத்தேவன், அருள்மொழிவர்மன், or குந்தவை), I am sure that was also an intentional ploy by the great writer. If you have already read the first four books, you definitely wouldn't need this clunky review to read the fifth one. The way he unveils character's backstory and their behaviour is amusing. This book has everything a person can ask for like Love, Friendship, Betrayal, Vengeance, Warriors, Wars, Sacrifice, Tsunami, Storm, and Flood. One can loosely relate the storyline and characters with that of Game Of Thrones. What amazes me is that Kalki has spent nearly 3.5 years of his life for this book. He travelled throughout South India and to Sri Lanka a couple of times to collect information for this book. No wonder this book has been hailed still now.Overall a Wonderful read.
