‘You don’t fear death.you welcome it. Your punishment must be more severe.’Released in 2012, Rises is the last of the Nolan trilogy. Based on a few comic book stories, including ‘ and subject to another viral marketing campaign, it is the second film in the Batman series to earn 1bn, and one of the (at the time of writing). Despite this, it missed out on Academy Award nominations (the only one of the trilogy not to be nominated), which put it in the same category as (also not nominated). The main cast from the previous two movies return. Anne Hathaway joins them as Catwoman/Selina Kyle, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Matthew Modine as Foley, Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John Blake and of course Tom Hardy as Bane.

The story starts (after a great opening sequence that introduces the villain Bane during a mid-air kidnapping) with Bruce Wayne now a recluse and Wayne Enterprises losing money. His fingerprints then get stolen by Selina Kyle (Hathaway) in order to sell them to John Daggett.

When the sale goes wrong, the police arrive. Gordon follows Daggetts men into the sewer where he discovers Bane, but is almost killed.

He is found by rookie cop John Blake (Gordon-Levitt), who then convinces Bruce to become Batman again.Bane then attacks the stock exchange, setting off a clever and carefully executed plan to destroy Gotham. Bruce falls into his trap, and after a brutal fight becomes Bane’s prisoner, as he is left to helplessly watch the final stages of Bane’s plan unfold.

Rises

Bruce then faces a race against time to escape his prison, both physically and mentally, in order to get back to Gotham and stop Bane from destroying the city. That is a very short version of a story which ties up loose ends as well as telling a story of its own and bringing the trilogy to a satisfying conclusion. Bane is both physically and mentally superior to Bruce Wayne, and Hardy worked hard to get Bane’s physique as well as character right. He is always going to be unfairly compared to Heath Ledger. But just like Ledger, Hardy has the ability to elevate scenes, and has a commanding on-screen presence. The line ‘That’s a lovely, lovely voice’ just before that stadium scene increases the impact of it and was totally improvised. He received quite a bit of criticism from fans about his voice in the movie, especially not being able to understand him. I personally think it is a little exaggerated because I can understand him just fine. The way Hardy uses his voice actually adds to the way his character unsettles you. Raspberry pi paper presentation.

At first it does seem strange, but the more you witness the behaviour of the villain at odds with the eloquent, intelligent voice, the more you appreciate how that would feel in real life.Comparing him to Ledger misses the point. They are two entirely different performances of two entirely different characters. Both of them fit the more realistic world Nolan crafted.Hathaway is also amazing in the supporting role of Selina Kyle. There were a few murmurs when she was cast, but she puts those to bed in her first scene. She totally understands the character and how she fits in this world. Despite us knowing she is Catwoman, she is never actually referred to by that name in the movie.Gordon-Levitt is great in the role of Blake (Robin, but not Robin) too. The only character I was a little disappointed with is Miranda Tate.SPOILER ALERT.

For what turns out to be the actual person in charge, this is a very undeveloped role. I get that if she had been more prominent people might have seen the ‘twist’ coming, but we didn’t really need to. It was pretty obvious who she was the moment Cotillard was cast.I think she is criminally underused here, which is one of the reasons I think this movie falls short of reaching the same heights as the previous one. It’s nothing to do with Cotillard, although she probably has the most unintentionally funny death scene in a movie for a while, but more to do with the fact that the reveal reduces Bane to a mere henchman after building him up the entire movie, and the impact is largely wasted because we already know.END SPOLIER.

The action sequences are great. With no music, the fight between Batman and Bane is more intense, and there is a creeping claustrophobia as Batman’s world closes in on him as he is trapped with nowhere to run in a fight he cannot win. It was great to see that iconic scene from Knightfall on the big screen too.

The action is actually something I think Nolan does better in this movie.Admittedly there are plot points which are not so great, like the entire police force going down into the sewer at once, or villains having guns but being allergic to actually pulling the trigger, preferring to use them as clubs. I think a lot of them can be forgiven, especially as some apply to other movies where it isn’t criticised, including.James newton Howard didn’t join Hans Zimmer on the score for this one, Zimmer worked on his own. I think the music is also the best here out of the entire trilogy. It captures every scene perfectly. Zimmer deserves great credit for his work on the trilogy because the score enhances the entire thing to a higher level. Overall, this is probably the most ambitious of all three Nolan movies, and mostly succeeds with everything it sets out to do, which is no small task given the two movies it followed and the overall story arc it needed to conclude.

Besides under-using the character of Miranda Tate and a couple of plot holes that do admittedly ask you to suspend your disbelief a little too much, this actually improves on some of the things from the first two movies. For those reasons, I think it is better than, and almost reaches the level of TDK. It also has the dependably great performances of the returning cast. No matter what your opinion on where this movie sits in the trilogy, it’s hard to argue against this being one of the greatest comic book trilogies ever.My Score:Movie info from: Directed byProduced.
